So our happy easy going baby has started with trouble (that's with a capital T that rhymes with P that stands for pool...). She refuses to sleep. Last night she was up until 3. Or at least that's when I finally passed out. I have to assume she woke up later because she was in bed with us in the morning. At times it seems she just wanted to be up, as if it were play time. But then she let out her grunt-squeels that led to crying. She acted hungry, but refused to eat. She acted hungry, but refused to sleep. We walked and rocked then finally swaddled.
We are now acting under the theory that she's flip-flopped day and night. Ethan woke her up this morning at 8 before leaving for work for a feeding. And today tried not to let her sleep too long. Although it's hard to wake a sleeping baby! I tried to make sure that she's had enough to eat.
As of now we've had to resort to running the vacuum.....

Quinn Meets the family

New father Glenn Fleishman has created a list of 9 ways to get your baby to sleep at night. He has published this list on his blog: GlennLog. Allison and I have used a lot of these tricks, not all of them. We swear by the swaddling method:

1. Swaddling. You've heard it, you know it, but you have to do it. We wound up buying the Miracle Blanket to help, but a tight swaddle in any receiving blankets that's comfortable for Ben and keeps him from swinging his hands around, waking himself up, is key to good sleep. We're somewhere between a few weeks and a few months to not swaddling him at all. We'll transition out. We were told by another parent that if you wait too long, the kid can become dependent on the swaddle for sleeping.

I can hardly keep up. I wake up to a new baby. Yesterday we had lunch at PDI. Before I could start the car and leave a checked and double checked the car seat to see if it was tilted too far forward, and it wasn't. She was holding her head up in a sitting like fashion looking at her toy turtle clipped to the top of the car seat and bringing it to her mouth. So two thing had changed. She was holding her head up toward a sit and she was successfully bringing things to her mouth.

We joined our birth class graduates this weekend to share some good food and recount our birth stories. It was a great class. I was to hear how everyone is doing and see their babies.

I read this great article on the website Being Daddy called: Square: The Unhip Parent's Manifesto. It was written in response to another article that was published in the New York Observer. (Unfortunately I can't find the original article, it looks like the NY Observer has pulled it)

Here's a part of the article I really like:


"Parenting is the greatest of democracies; anyone can participate. But this stands in direct opposition to some of the very tenents of hipsterism: exclusivity, elitism, superiority. And this seems to be what drives hipsters like Williams crazy: the fact that anyone can parent well. The dumb and the smart, the ugly and the attractive. Educated and un-. Democrat, Republican. Liberal, conservative. The hip and the unhip. Male or female, straight and (yes, you conservatives out there who proudly didn't think I was talking to you too) gay. The cool and the pathetic. The lot of them can be good parents - amazing parents. There is no formula for great parenting, no indespensible superficial ingredient. Because love does not discriminate."

"Of course, the converse is true as well: a person in any of the above groups can be a terrible parent. But it is perhaps particularly those "pushy parents" who view their children as extensions of themselves that make some of the worst. I've only been a father for about 9 weeks now, and I'm already bumping into the idea of whether I'm a cool dad or not. This article also strikes home with me because I work at a place that is constantly reminding me if I'm cool or not. Or if I'm a hipster or not. It points out that I should really focus on what's important. Steer your kid away from Barny not because he's uncool but because he lacks imagination. I like the idea of this. It's also good to hear about another parent who's facing the same issues that I'm facing every day. It's not High School any more, I shouldn't care what others think of me.

Everyone is sick. I'm afraid I'm the guilty one. I caught a small cold at work last week and brought it home for everyone else. I tried to quarantine myself by sleeping in another room and washing my hands, but it looks like my efforts were in vain. I stayed home on Monday to take care of Allison and Quinn. I tried to let Allison get as much sleep as possible while I kept Quinn happy. It was hard, Quinn looks so sad with a stuffy-runny nose. We called the pediatrician, they said just to keep an eye on Quinn's temperature but for the most part just let the cold take it's course. She was the worst on Monday, today both Allison and Quinn look much better. They should be over it by the end of the week.

Quinn had her two month check up yesterday. It seems that she is in good working order. She remains ontrack with her height and weight staying above the 95th percentile and her head lagging around the 75th. We've been lucky again to find another great doctor. She really encoursges our questions. After our Q&A the nurse came in and gave her her first set of vaccines. There were four total, two in each thigh, Polio, Hepatitis B, MMR, and DTaP (Diptheria, Tetanus, Petussis). Th e doctor gave us a dosage for tylanol which I gave her for one day because she seemed very sensitive on her thighs making putting on her diaper a challenge. She seemed to run hot for a day, but her temp was always normal. Everything is good now!

Her stats to date:

Height: 25in
Weight: 12lbs 10oz
Head Circ: 39.0 cm

I find that she's at the edge of all her 0-3 month clothes but not quite big enough for the 3-6 months in allot of her outfits yet. She still has a killer smile!

This weekend we finally have our birthing class reunion. I'm excited to see how all of the other natural-birthers turned out. I already know I'm not the only cesaerean. And Quinn will be the youngest in the group, since Miss fancy pants had to be dragged out....
