Craig's List Booty
We scored! A total Craig's List find.
We got a Baby Bjorn carrier for more than half off retail. We also picked up an infant car seat that has a second car base so that we won't have to move them between cars. It's a Graco Snug Ride. It's actually part of a set, but they were only selling the car seat part. The cool thing is that we can just buy any Graco stroller and the infant seat fits in.
We also picked up a bouncer seat, some socks and mittens, onesies and jumpers. Alot were free or under a dollar.
Craig's list rules...

Glucose Tolerance Test
So I did it. And it wasn't as bad. I had to drink something every similar to Dr. Brown's orange soda, wait an hour (luckily I had my knitting), and with one stick it was all done.
I'll get the results in three weeks when we go back to the doctor.

24 Weeks: Trip to the doctor.
I love going to the doctors office. It's such a mind settling experience. Not that I suspect that things are going wrong, but thoughts creep into your head by the time a month passes before your next visit. Things like am I gaining the right amount of weight or am I eating right.
This time we had questions from our hospital tour. And just another example of how awesome our doctor is she wanted to hear them all.
The first thing we talked about is the Vitamin K shot they said they give newborns. I wanted to know how necessary it was and what it does for the baby. Dr Bluvas says the Vitamin K is a part of the blood clotting system and that it's a preventive measure for the baby. Due to the stress of delivery there is possibility of the baby bursting a blood vessel in the head. Not something that is common, but it may not be immediatedetectableble. The result could be our healthy newborn now has brain damage. So far sounds like a fine idea. I'm not so hot on medical interference, but there's nothing wrong with prevention as long as there's no negative side effects.
We also talked about IVs and monitoring. If all things go well I won't need a continuous IV or to have a monitor strapped on. It was comforting to know, since I hate needles, I didn't want one in me for a long period of time while I'm dealing with labor. The same goes for a baby monitor. I think there will be enough to concentrate without having to be hooked up to constant monitors and IVs.
I was also really upset to find out that the birthing tub at the hospital can't be used if your water has broke. And that made it clear why the tub rarely got used. It made sense to me that most women's sack would break before even getting to the hospital. Dr. Bluvas seems to think that the chance are good and that itÂs more likely that it won't break until I'm even 9cm dilated. I think what she said was that it's only about 10-15% of women whose water breaks at the beginning of labor.
Everything else went well. I've now gained 4 more pounds in the last three weeks for a total of 8. I love this, when else in your life do you have the impetus to gain more than a pound per week? (And all of it going to the front.) The baby's heartbeat was 155bpm. A little lower than the last few 160bpm that we've got the last few times. Which only means we didn't get the "girl's heartbeat" comment. This is the first time the doctor got out a measuring tape to measure my uterus which is now a couple of inches above my belly button. She said everything was perfect.
All is good and I'm very excited. And it seems I've gotten a lot of energy back. (When I said as much to Ethan he laughed and commented "that's for sure".) I think it was hard on Ethan for the first half when I was really down for the count.

The Forbiddon Zone
I have officially deamed anything below my knees the forbiddon zone. Which means if I drop it or it falls to a level below my knees, that's where it's going to stay. This also works if I end up in the forbiddon zone, because I can no longer get myself up.

Bigger Better Bra
It was time. We went out shopping this weekend I had to pick up bigger clothes. My bras especially had become too tight and uncomfortable, something I was not too excited about. I also picked up a few cooler shirts the next size up.
Mean while the baby continues to kick and squirm. I especially notice the hiccups because they're jerky, larger movements. I try to explain that it's not nice to kick your mother and that we're going to have a stern talkijng to when we get out...
Tomorow is my doctor's appointment. Il love going, it's like visiting normal-land, where everything I've been feeling is normal. I'm not looking forward to the next blood test. This month they test for gestational diabetes which involves several sticks.

Week 12
I'm still updating our pictures of ultrasound, here's our kid at week 12.

If you look closely you can make out his skull. I'm not sure if the angel is from the front or back. But there's a definite jaw bone where the mouse arrow is.
If you'd like to see video of this ultrasound you can go here.
Allison has been getting bigger. According to all the books we've been reading, this is the time where the baby starts to bulk up, putting on weight and mussel.
We've been trying to make room for the upcoming child. We've been cleaning out the garage, and we've been selling a lot of stuff at work. We're trying to get rid of a rooms worth of stuff to make way for all the baby stuff that's coming our way.

The Ultimate Baby Blog
I have to say this is the ultimate baby blog. It's so detailed, it catalogs everything the baby's been asleep, it's diapers, everything. I would like this blog to be like it, but I just don't have the know how:

23 Weeks (17 to go)
I haven't popped yet. I'm still wearing the same pants I bought in November, although they fit allot better.
Our next doctor's appointment is next Tuesday. Tune in Wednesday for an update. This week I'm supposed to take the gestational diabetes test. Needles and more needles, Ick! I know I still need to finish about the hospital. I'm still collecting my thoughts.
We've begun a major clean out. Not completely a nesting thing. After four months of neglect while planning a wedding our house needed some fine tuning. I've already sold off our wedding planning books at work and I have a box of art monographs to get rid of. I had five bags of clothes to take to the donation center and Ethan had another three. We emptied a bunch of stuff from the garage and Ethan demolished one of the old and cruddy cabinets built into the garage and took the doors off another. Already it looks bigger! Ethan put the old loveseat out on the curb with a free sign posted to it, but sadly it's still there. It's hard having to stop after working on one thing all weekend to go back to work on another.
We also spent some time looking at baby things. We hit Mervyn's and Toys R Us on Friday and Target on Saturday. I really liked the stroller we looked at in Target. Since We spend most of our time online it was nice to see some things in person. We couldn't resist picking up a few cute outfits at Mervyn's. We also tried on several harness type carriers. I think you need a masters in physics to figure some of these things out. I think we agree that we like the one by Baby Bjorn. Some friend at work recommended checking onto Craigs list for what we liked for half the price.
I think we've decided on a few things. Like we want to use a cosleeper instead of a bassinet. I've already started to bookmark stuff in registries that we like so we can remember what to go look at in person. So far there's stuff at Target's Lullaby Club, Baby Center.Com and Pottery Barn Kids.
We're also looking into hiring a Doula. Having a Doula present at a birth greatly reduces the occurance of episiotomies and cesarians. In any case going to the hospital has kicked me into gear about our birth plan.

Fish
There's been talk about remembering which fish is okay, and which is not. This is an article that helps separate the two. This is important being that fish is a major source of protien for me since I don't eat other animals.
To avoid:
Shark
Swordfish
Mackrel
Tilefish
Golden Snapper
White Snapper
Good to go:
Halibut
Salmon
Scallops

Sequoia Hospital
It was like reality smaking me dead in the face. I can't remember the last time I was in a hospital room.

Another One
Here's the scan from our second ultra-sound. As you can see this one is much bigger. He/she has moved from fuzzy dot stage to Alien stage. We missed the Moose Pig stage all together. It's probably for the best. This was the first ultrasound that I could attend. It was a fun experience and it brought the reality of the fact that we're having a kid from the hypothetical to the very real for me.

I also made a video of the ultra-sound. Every time we show the video to our friends they exclaim "Oh what a great idea. I wish I thought of that." Really I was disappointed that I had to tape the monitor and I couldn't directly plug my camera into the machine. We're glad we video taped it because we can hear the doctor over again. It clears up a lot of questions we have after the fact.
You can watch the video here, I have to warn you, it's a very large file. Don't attempt it unless you have a very fast connection and a lot of time. Sorry, it was also my first attempt at putting video on line:)

Read any good books lately?
We've read that our kid can hear our voices this early. And you can start to read s/he bedtime stories. If you read them now over and over again, you can use them later when s/he's nursing and they'll have a better time nursing. Allison tells me that the baby seems to calm down when I read stories.
I felt the baby move last week. Just a bump. It's hard to distinguish it from Allison's pulse, but we both felt it at the same time so I'm pretty sure it was the baby.

Again Again
You've all have probably seen these before but I'm posting the frame grabs from our old ultrasounds on this blog for posterity reasons. This picture was from our first ultra-sound. They don't normally do ultra-sounds this early. In fact they usually won't talk to you until your eighth week. But we were scared first time parents who didn't know what to do. I didn't know if Allison's vegetarian diet would effect the baby, everything we did seemed to have the question of "Is this OK for the baby". So they squeezed Allison inbetween two appointments and did this ultrasound. I really wish I could have been there.

20 Week Doctor's Appointment
We returned from our honeymoon to have our latest doctor's appointment that Tuesday. And this was the fastest one we've had.
I'm finally starting to gain weight. Three pounds this past month. This makes a total of four, including the one whole pound I gained last month. The doctor says this is just fine since I already have a nice cozy layer of fat I won't need to put on lots of weight. Dr. Bluvas said it was normal in the first months I could loose a few inches just due to improving my diet and that I've stopped drinking soda. Yes you heard correctly, I've stopped drinking Pepsi....
This appointment went really fast. I guess we're getting into the routine: weight (good), urine (no sugars or proteins), blood pressure (excellent), fundus (top of uterus just at my belly button), heart beat (160 bpm notably a girls again), q&a. Everything was peachy. And it's always nice to hear the baby's heart beat.
We did finally got results from the ultra-sound we had just before leaving for the wedding. It was really quick. Dr. Bluvas said that the size of the baby was just right and everything was reported as normal. She also noted that because they couldn't tell the sex that there is a probability of it being a girl as well....hmm, the Baby Magic 8 Ball again says "all signs point to girl".
The score so far:
Signs of Girl - 4
Signs of Boy - 0
Anybody want to place a bet?
Our next chance to find out will be at 30 weeks. I think it's a pity ultra-sound. As in the doctor will take pity on us and do one before the baby gets to squished.
